How to Choose Props That Tell Your Brand Story in Photos
Let me ask you something. When you scroll through Instagram and you stop on someone's photo, like actually stop and save it, what made you do that?
I'd bet it wasn't just their face. It was the whole vibe. The coffee cup, the notebook, the way the light hit the flowers on their desk. The tiny details that made you feel like you knew them before you even read the caption.
That's the magic of a well-chosen prop. And honestly? It's one of the most underrated parts of a brand photo session.
So let's talk about how to choose props that don't just fill space in the frame, but actually say something about who you are and what you do, that helps tell your story.
First: What Is a Prop Actually For?
A prop isn't decoration. It's a conversation starter.
Every single thing you bring into your photos is communicating something to your dream client. Your laptop says you're a modern business owner. Your handwritten journal says you're thoughtful and intentional. Your expensive latte says… well, it says a lot of things, and most of them are good.
The goal is to choose items that feel like a natural extension of you and your brand, not a costume, not a set design, just a true glimpse into your world.
When we get this right, your photos stop looking like "photos for my website" and start looking like a window into your actual business personality. And that's what attracts the right clients. Showing who YOU are.
The 3 Questions to Ask Before You Pack a Single Prop
Before you start grabbing things off your shelves, run everything through these three questions:
1. Does this show what I do or how I work?
Think about the tools of your trade. A nutritionist might bring her favourite cookbook and a beautiful bowl of fresh ingredients. A business coach might bring her journal and the book she recommends to every single client. A designer might bring colour swatches and a beautifully curated moodboard.
If a total stranger looked at your photo, would they have a sense of what you do? That's your litmus test.
2. Does this match the feeling I want my brand to have?
A luxury wellness brand is going to feel very different from a bold, high-energy marketing agency - and that difference shows up in the details.
Think about the brands you love. Are they clean and minimal? Rich and textured? Bright and playful? Your props should match that same energy. A crystal diffuser, linen fabric, and dried botanicals feel very different than a neon sticky note, a printed spreadsheet, and a bold coffee mug. Neither is wrong - they just tell completely different stories.
What story are you trying to tell?
3. Does this actually look like something I own and use?
This one matters more than people think. When clients come to you, they're not just buying your service, they're buying into you. So the last thing you want is for your brand photos to feel like a stranger styled a fake version of your life.
If you never use a fountain pen, don't prop one. If your desk is always a little lived-in (same 🙋♀️), it's okay to show that. Authenticity photographs beautifully.
Props That Always Work (and Why)
Not sure where to start? Here are a few categories that photograph well and almost always tell a compelling brand story:
Your workspace essentials - laptop, planner, notebooks, favourite pens. These ground the photo in your real work life.
Meaningful objects - the mug someone gifted you, the book that changed how you run your business, the photo from your favourite trip. These create instant connection and give people something to ask you about.
Products you actually use - skincare, candles, journals, coffee. If it's on your desk or in your bag on any given Tuesday, it belongs in your photos.
Anything with your brand colours - florals, stationery, fabric, even fruit. A subtle nod to your palette ties everything together beautifully.
A Few Things to Leave at Home
I say this with so much love: not everything needs to be in your photos.
Avoid anything that dates quickly. Technology props especially - an older model laptop or phone will age your photos faster than anything else.
Skip the generic. A stack of random books that have nothing to do with your industry, a succulent you grabbed from the grocery store, a marble tray with no personal meaning — these fill space but don't tell a story.
Don't overload the frame. More is not more when it comes to brand photography. Two or three thoughtfully chosen props will always outperform a cluttered surface with twelve. Trust the edit.
The Prop Prep I Do With Every Client
When we work together, this is one of the things we talk about in your pre-session prep. I'll ask you about your business, your vibe, the clients you want to attract - and then we'll build a prop list together that actually makes sense for you.
Because your photos should look like your life, not a generic brand template.
The women I photograph are doing real, meaningful work in their businesses. Their photos should show that - and the right props are one of the most powerful ways to make that happen.
