The Questions I Ask Before Every Brand Photography Session
If you're getting ready to book a brand photography session, you might assume it starts with picking outfits or scouting a pretty location. But as a Calgary brand photographer, I can tell you the real work happens before the camera ever comes out — in the questions.
Here are the three questions I ask every client before we plan their personal brand photoshoot, and why they matter more than you'd think.
1. Who Is Your Ideal Client?
Before we talk outfits or locations, we talk about who you're trying to reach. A brand photography session designed to attract corporate clients looks completely different from one built for creative entrepreneurs or new moms.
Understanding your ideal client shapes everything: your color palette, your posing style, your location choices, and even the energy we bring to the shoot. This is the foundation of effective personal branding photography - every choice should speak directly to the person you want in your audience.
2. What Do You Want Them to Feel?
This question is where brand strategy and photography really intersect. Do you want your audience to feel like they can trust you? That you're approachable? Luxurious? Fun and relatable?
The emotional response you're going for determines your outfit choices, your posing, your backdrop, and your overall shoot concept. Great business branding photos aren't just visually appealing - they're emotionally strategic.
3. What's the Goal of These Photos?
Are these images for your website? Your Instagram feed? A press feature or media kit? Each of these has different technical and stylistic requirements.
Website photography often needs more polished, evergreen shots. Social media content benefits from a wider variety of candid, in-the-moment images. Knowing your goal upfront means we're not wasting shoot time (or outfit changes) on images you won't actually use.
Why Brand Photography Is Strategy, Not Just Photos
Here's what I want every business owner to understand: a professional brand photoshoot isn't just about getting "good pictures." It's about creating a visual foundation that actually supports your business goals.
That's why, as a Calgary-based brand photographer, I don't just show up and start shooting. Every session includes a full planning process - a client questionnaire, a one-on-one planning call, a custom shot list, and a complete brand map covering your colors, themes, and vibe.
By the time you walk into your session, every detail has already been figured out. All you have to do is show up.
